These she revealed In a cateh-aa-eatch-can conversation that started out as an interview and developed Into: 1. A romp with a dog. 2. A visit with an old friend, and i. A with a hairdresser.

If Miss Conklin briwss to her role in "The President Vanishes" she's leading lady in the romance department one-half the personality she displayed in this reportor-jal session, she may atartle aa a fresh "discovery." The odds are against it, sadly enough. The hairdresser, as we left, was arranging her tousled hair into neat curls, and the gentleman from the set, sent to fetch her, had reminded her that she was to wear what she had worn in the morning. Besides, no leading lady in serious drama Is allowed to laugh so much, so heartily yea, so impertinently! as Peggy managed to laugh in this half hour. Certainly no secretary in the White House that's Peggy's role flits gamin-like with her knees la her arms, wearing tousled hair, slacks and a plaid Jacket, and Jumps to the floor to scramble and wrestle with a dog. all the while answering questions.

She signed those two previous Jim contracts, she confessed, simply because "signing things" is one of her weaknesses. She "backed out" of coming to Hollywood because she really didn't want to be In pictures after all. She never had wanted to be In pirtures. She signed with Walter Wanger and came to Hollywood because he had a definite role for her. Snoop-eel" "Snoopy" was the Scottish ter- 1 V.a 1 .1 WIU 4k, friend.

She brought not only "Snoopy" but 'Snoopy's" lunch ground meat and cheese. Pegg's eyes lit up. "Don't leave it, Kate," she warned, "or I'll eat It myself. I'm craiy about raw meat!" Jknd then the hairdresser took charge. Neat curls replaced the tousled curls.

And soon, no doubt, she would don a costume befitting a White House secretary. And on the set the peals of Infectious laughter would give way to art and emotion. WOMEN LIKETOSEE THE WORLD A LITTLE BETTER THAN IT IS Erik Charell, Director of 'Cara van Believes Showing Bright Side in Pictures "Women like not to see the world as It is: they think It Is possible for it to be a little better than it is." That is what Krik Charell, who recently completed his first American film "Caravan" for Fox, says.

He made the picture "Congress Pances" and produced "White Horsa Inn" abroad. And that is. perhaps the reason that he "lets show a world that Is a little bit better and nicer than reality will make of It" when he does a new picture. For it Is women who make or break a picture at the box office, Mr. Charell is convinced.

"It is they who have the matinee leisure, who have complacent escorts eager to be steered where the woman wants to go. and who go back with the children to see a film If It really does show a world "better and nicer than it ta." it." Not that women like their cinema heroes to be namby-pamby boys, this good looking enthusiastic young Continental impresario explained. "TTley want a hero who is bad, but not too bad to be disliked. They want a man who has a little bit of good and a little bit of bad. which gives much character.

They want a little silver line, a wisp of tulle and glamour between them and the strongest situations; and the one gives them a brutal, dirty thing In his picture may give them life, but they won't admit it, or come out to see it."
