4B Press Sun-Bulletin Thursday, October 13, 1988 ambodian refugee tells of struggle for survival By MILLICENT LAWTON Staff Writer Cambodian refugee Dith Pran told the audience at the state University Center at Binghamton last night that he is not a hero or a politician. But neither is he an average father of a SUNY-Binghamton sophomore. anyone who saw the film The Killing Fields, which told of his escape from Cambodia following the U.S. withdrawal from Southeast Asia. Pran, now a photographer for The New York Times, spoke to a group of about 250 peers and faculty of his son Tito in an appearance sponsored by the school's Asian Student Union.

four years from 1975 to 1979, he struggled to survive the extermination policy of the country's leadership, the communist Khmer Rouge. The Cambodian holocaust took the lives of 2 million to 3 million people, Pran said. After outlining Cambodia's historical background to the largely youthful audience, Pran said that when the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975, he and other Cambo dians were pleased because these new leaders promised peace. "When the Khmer Rouge came to power, the war was over. People were happy," Pran said.

"But in only a few hours, the Khmer Rouge turned themselves into monsters. They arrested, tortured, elnptied the cities." He said the mentality of the Khmer Rouge was not unlike Hitler's. "Killing for them is happiness. If you kill someone, you become a hero," he said. Aside from withstanding 14- to 18-hour work days enforced by the Khmer Rouge, Pran said, survival depended on food that the regime did not supply.

Desperate hunger drove him to eat leaves, snakes, rats and grasshoppers. "When you are starving, everything is delicious," he said. Recalling the Armenian and Jew ish holocausts, Pran offered his story as a cautionary tale. "It did happen to the Cambodian people. If you don't pay attention, if you'don't try to do something, it may happen again." i Pran said the movie The Killing Fields has helped draw attention to the plight of the Cambodian people.

He said more American's are aware of the threats posed by Viet-nam and the Chinese-backed Khmer Rouge. Dith Pran's story is familiar to In his speech, Pran told how, for nniTI IABIEQ The Obituaries, In Memoriams, and Cards of Thanks that appear below are paid announcements. The list of UDI I UHHICw deaths that appears elsewhere in this section is provided free of charge by the Press Sun-Bulletin. JohnT.Legg of Binghamton. N.Y.
