About 100 residences in Ithaca and surrounding communities are threatened by rising lake waters fueled by melting snow, Ithaca Assistant Fire Chief Guy Van Benscho- ten said. No evacuations were ordered, he said.

A flood warning will remain in effect over the weekend, at least, for Cayuga Lake, said David Martin, a National Weather Service forecaster at Binghamton Regional Airport. A series of fast-moving storms expected to dump up to a quarter-inch of rain on the region will not have a pronounced affect on lake levels, he said. In the Southern Tier, a flood warning also in effect for the Susquehanna River at Waverly will probably be rescinded by today, said Peter Blottman, another forecaster at the airport. The river was at 11 xk feet, six inches above flood stage, and dropping Saturday, Blottman said. In Ithaca, the Kmart department store on Route 13 South closed early because of the rising waters, Van utiowiuiwi aaiu.

mc yarning iui, which also serves two other stores, was also flooded, he said. Firefighters sandbagged the Special Children'sBoard of Cooperative Educational Services building on Elmira Road and a transformer unit behind the Topps Plaza, Van Benschoten said. "We want to be proactive," Van Benschoten said. "We don't want to try and play catch-up with this." Cayuga Lake was measured at 387 feet Saturday afternoon, two feet above flood stage, Van Benschoten said. He could not speculate how high the lake would rise.

Officials in Tompkins County are especially concerned a strong north wind would cause a storm surge that could damage lakeside cottages, Van Benschoten said. Homes on East Shore Drive at the southern tip of the lake, in the Myers residential community in the Town of Lansing and the Maplewood Point community in the Town of Ulysses would be endangered by a storm surge, he said.
