The five-week course on death anmd dying is offered every two years, said teacher Diane Arbes, who said she likes to teath that literature is experience. She said students relate to books and poems more closely if they cover something vital to students' lives.

Murray, director of the Tioga County Hospice and an ordained Presbyterian ex-'. plained death simply. "Your heart 'will stop beating, you will stop breathing, but a part of your life goes on, in some way in some place," she said. Murray said her toughest job is to help prepare terminally ill people and their families for death. She said hospice workers educate terminal clients and their relatives about death to allay their fears of the unknown and to prepare them for what to expect.

A question students asked was why do people joke about death. Murray said it is normal for people to joke about what is unfamiliar to them. Also, dying people are no different from the rest of us in that they have a sense of humor. She then recounted an experience with her first hospice patient: She said the patient was scantily clothed in a hot room when she went to visit him for the first time. "He apologized, and I said Tm not here to look at your and he said 'Oh, and he "was dead within a few hours," she said.
