(AP) Roger Baldwin, who helped found the American Civil Liberties Union and spent 60 years protecting individual freedoms, is dead at 97. The mentor of a nationwide network of lawyers, whose clients ranged from Communists and pacifists to Nazis and Ku Klux Klan 1 members, remained active virtually to the end. Since his official retirement as executive director more than 30 years ago, he had concerned himself with fostering the International League for Human Rights but remained in close touch with ACLU's operations in this country. Baldwin had long suffered from emphysema and heart trouble, and he was admitted to Valley Hospital in nearby Ridgewood on Sunday. Baldwin supported Communist causes in the 1930s, but the Soviet purge trials and the Hitler-Stalin pact turned him and most of his fellow liberals away from the Communists.

After being electrified by an anarchist lecture, Baldwin came to New York in 1917 as director of the American Union Against Militarism.
