4B Press Sun-Bulletin Delaware Co. to have festive weekend Ravenous viburnum leaf beetle chewing its way across New York ticularly the viburnum. Larvae hatch from eggs in mid-May and feed on the leaves for about a month. Then the adults gorge on the leaves and eventually lay their eggs on the twigs, perpetuating the cycle. "Last year, it was a small population when the adult beetles emerged," Hoebeke said.

"We'll see large populations this year, and based on our experience in the Rochester and Buffalo area, we will start to hear more from homeowners between now and next year." Hoebeke suggests trimming the current year's branch growth in the fall or early spring to eliminate the eggs. Then destroy the trimmings. There are no pesticide products specifically labeled to use against the viburnum beetle. Paul A. Weston, a senior research associate at Cornell, is testing natural predators like ladybugs and parasitic wasps as well as trying to learn why viburnum is susceptible to the beetle while other plants are resistant.

The viburnum leaf beetle a ravenous pest that feasts on the shrubs that share its name has been detected in the western and central New York, including Owego, entomologists at Cornell University said. A warm spring may have led to the early sightings. "The beetles have-been a little ahead of themselves," said E. Richard Hoebeke, assistant curator of the Cornell Entomology Collection. Near the end of May the beetle was discovered in Owego just a few miles from the Pennsylvania border for the first time since it was first discovered in 1996 near Lake Ontario in Cayuga County.

It has been found devouring plants in 26 upstate counties since. The beetle is a small, dark brown blotch about the size of a matchstick head. In larval and adult forms, they can be devastating to ornamental plants, par Jennifer Henry of Binghamton Jennifer Henry, 85, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Willow Point Nursing Home.
