photo provided Garden Club presents Drupa scholar award HARPURSVILLE The Binghamton Garden Club recently awarded Chantal Messinger the Laimons E. and Sylvia Drupa scholar award in the amount of $10,000. Messinger was the 2013 salutatorian of Harpursville Central High School. She plans to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho to pursue studies in biology and ecology. She is the daughter of Todd and Jessica Messinger of Harpursville.

M-E students to attend leadership conference ENDWELL The Endwell Rotary Club selected Grace Chow, Ernesto J. Porcari, Carla Spera, Brian Talbot and Mikayla Wright, all of Maine-Endwell High School, to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference that was held June 23-28 at SUNY Oneonta. The conference featured speakers and workshops focused on decision making, critical thinking, communicating effectively, time management, ethics, career development, public service, contemporary problems and other challenging issues. Keuka College presents excellence awards Kaitlin Korver, of Sherburne, and Rebecca Allen, of Oxford, were recognized for academic achievements during Keuka College's annual Honors Convocation ceremony held at the college in May. Korver received the Academic Excellence in Early Childhood Education award, and Allen received the Academic Excellence in Childhood Education award.

Hurford '60 Center for the Arts and Humanities to spend the summer working in Philadelphia with a project titled, "The Ward: Race and Class in Du Bois' Seventh Ward" through the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.

She will work on an oral history component of the project, interviewing at historic black churches and developing an open-access, web-based course. Wolkoff, a resident of Vestal, is a rising senior at Haverford College. BOOKS program awards grants BOOKS, a partnership of state Sen. Power of a Purse campaign a success Mothers More of Broome-Tioga participated in a national campaign, Power of a Purse, and collected more than 900 new and gently used purses this year to donate to organizations that serve financially disadvantaged women, including the SOS Shelter, YWCA of Binghamton, A New Hope Center, Mom's House, Catholic Charities and the VOA women's shelter. Campaign efforts included a partnership with Weight Watchers in Vestal, which was used as a collection site. The local Junior League also donated approximately 50 purses.
